What is an Engine Oil and what is it made up of?

An Engine Oil or Motor Oil is a lubricant that essentially reduces friction between contact surfaces within the engine. An engine oil is in liquid form and can be mineral , synthetic or semi-sythetic based on the Base oil that is used in its production.

Lets learn more about a lubricant. A Lubricant in general constitutes of two main elements: The Base oil typically  ( 70-95% ) and mutiple Additives  ( 5-30%). A Base oil as the name indicates is the core element of the lubricant. There are 5 groups of base oils and the type of base oil is chosen depending on the application of the lubricant. Additives are added to the base oil to improve or enhance certain properties of the base oil e.g. Antiwear, Viscosity index, Pour point .Detergency, Antirust , Anticorrosion etc.
